Presented by Small Blessings, Inc. Director and Family Advocate, Lee Ann Balta, Parenting Counts is a research-based program developed by Talaris Institute to support parents and caregivers in raising socially and emotionally healthy children. These high-quality, research-based, easy-to-use tools and materials are aimed to help make a difference in the lives of parents and children. Our approach is to provide parents, caregivers, and early learning professionals with information they can trust, understand, and use in their daily interactions with children.
Emerging Literacy Skills will focus on:
- Gone Fishing/Story Time
- Workshop participants will explore:
- How learning to read begins well before kindergarten
- How parents and caregivers can encourage children’s interest in spoken and written words
- How to make the home or childcare a supportive environment that helps children’s language skills grow
- How children can learn about words through everyday experiences
- Dad’s Club

- Keep Talking Workshop participants will learn that:
- Children learn language by hearing many examples of sounds and words.
- It is important to talk, sing and read to young children from birth.
- Parents can make a difference in their child’s vocabularies when they give their children lots of practice with sounds and words – starting at birth.
- Games and conversations that teach children how to take turns are important for learning language and making them feel secure.
- It takes many years of practice for most children to master the sounds of their language.
Childcare and snacks provided, please R.S.V.P. with child's names and ages for childcare.
